How should Pertussin be taken correctly?

Adults and children aged 12 years and older should take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day. Children aged 9 to 12 years — 1 dessert spoon 3 times a day. Children aged 6 to 9 years — 1 teaspoon. Children aged 4 to 6 years — 1/2 teaspoon, which must be dissolved in 20 ml of cooled boiled water.

What side effects may occur from taking Pertussin?

Allergic reactions and gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) are possible. Prolonged use may lead to bromism phenomena: skin rashes, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, gastroenterocolitis, general weakness, impaired coordination (ataxia), and slowed heart rate (bradycardia).

Who should not take this drug?

Contraindications include individual intolerance to components (specifically bromides), heart failure, low blood pressure, atherosclerosis, anemia, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and alcoholism. It should also not be taken by children under 4 years of age and people with increased sensitivity to plants of the Lamiaceae family, celery, or birch pollen.

Can the drug be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Due to the lack of sufficient data, use of the product during these periods is not recommended.

How does the drug interact with other medicines?

Taking it together with barbiturates requires caution, as the effect of the latter may be enhanced. If taking any other medicines simultaneously, it is essential to inform your doctor.

Does the drug affect the ability to drive a vehicle?

Since the syrup contains alcohol, caution should be exercised when driving motor vehicles or operating machinery after its use.

Instructions for use

INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL USE OF THE MEDICINAL PRODUCT PERTUSIN

Composition:

Active ingredients: 100 g of syrup contains: liquid extract of thyme herb (1:1) [Serpylli herba (1:1)] (extraction solvent – ethanol 30%) – 12 g; potassium bromide – 1 g;

Excipients: sugar syrup, ethanol 80%.

Pharmaceutical form. Syrup.

Main physicochemical characteristics: liquid, light brown to dark brown in color, with a pleasant odor.

Pharmacological properties.

Pharmacodynamics. Pertussin belongs to the group of secretomotor agents. The drug soothes cough and exerts a calming effect. Pertussin stimulates the physiological activity of the ciliated epithelium and peristaltic movements of the bronchioles, promoting the movement of mucus from the lower respiratory tract to the upper sections and its subsequent expulsion.

Clinical characteristics.

Indications.

Symptomatic treatment of inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract accompanied by cough with difficult expectoration of sputum: bronchitis, tracheitis, pneumonia, whooping cough.

Contraindications.

Individual hypersensitivity to components of the medicinal product, including bromides, decompensated heart failure, arterial hypotension, severe atherosclerosis, anemia, kidney diseases, diabetes mellitus, alcoholism.

Increased sensitivity to components of the drug or to other plants of the Lamiaceae family, as well as sensitivity to celery and birch pollen (possible cross-reaction); children under 4 years of age.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions.

Concomitant use of potassium bromide with barbiturates requires caution (their effect is enhanced).

When using any other medicinal products simultaneously, inform your doctor!

Special precautions for use.

The recommended doses should be strictly observed when using the medication. Patients with diabetes mellitus must consult a physician before using the medication. For children aged 4 to 6 years, the syrup should be diluted with boiled water. 1 ml of syrup contains from 8.5% to 11% ethanol (alcohol), i.e. 1.3 g per dose (15 ml), which is equivalent to 26 ml of beer or 11 ml of wine per dose. This is harmful for patients suffering from alcoholism. Caution is advised when administering the medication to pregnant women, breastfeeding women, children, patients with liver disease, and patients with epilepsy.

If symptoms worsen and/or dyspnea, fever, or purulent sputum occur during treatment, medical advice must be sought. If symptoms persist for more than one week, a physician should be consulted.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Due to insufficient data, the medication is not recommended for use during these periods.

Ability to affect reaction speed when driving or operating machinery.

Since the medication contains alcohol, patients should exercise caution after taking it when driving or operating machinery.

Dosage and Administration.

For oral use.

For adults and children aged 12 years and older: 1 tablespoon three times a day.
For children aged 4 to 6 years: 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL); aged 6 to 9 years: 1 teaspoon (5 mL); aged 9 to 12 years: 1 dessert spoon, three times a day.
For children under 6 years of age, the single dose (1/2 teaspoon) should be dissolved in 20 mL (2 dessert spoons) of cooled boiled water.

The duration of treatment is determined by the physician, depending on the course of the disease, the nature of combination therapy, and the patient's tolerance to the drug.

Children.

The drug should be used in children aged 4 years and older only as prescribed by a physician.

Overdose.

Symptoms of bromism are possible: skin rashes, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, gastroenterocolitis, general weakness, ataxia, bradycardia.

The drug should be discontinued and symptomatic treatment administered.

Adverse Reactions.

With prolonged use, manifestations of bromism are possible: skin rashes, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, gastroenterocolitis, general weakness, ataxia, bradycardia. Treatment of bromism consists of discontinuing the drug and enhancing excretion of bromide salts (administration of large amounts of sodium chloride, fluids, diuretic agents).

Allergic reactions and gastrointestinal disturbances (including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) may also occur.

If any adverse effects occur, consult a physician immediately!

Shelf life. 4 years.

Storage conditions.

Store in a light-protected place at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.

Keep out of reach of children.

Do not use the medication after the expiry date stated on the packaging!
