It is used for diseases accompanied by oxygen starvation (hypoxia), such as pneumonia, pulmonary edema, bronchial asthma, heart failure, and coronary insufficiency. The drug is also used in cases of poisoning by carbon monoxide, cyanide, or asphyxiating gases, during anesthesia and after surgery, as well as for the preparation of oxygen cocktails.

In hospitals, the gas is usually administered through special masks connected to cylinders. At home, special containers (pillows) may be used. Most commonly, inhalation of a mixture with air at a concentration of 40–60% at a flow rate of 4–5 liters per minute is applied. The use of humidifiers is recommended. During hyperbaric oxygenation (under pressure), 8–10 sessions are conducted in hyperbaric chambers.

What are the possible side effects of Oxygen medicinal gaseous?

Some individuals may experience dizziness, nausea, coughing, irritation, or increased dryness of the mucous membranes. In case of overdose, vomiting and seizures are possible.

Who should not use this drug?

Contraindications for hyperbaric oxygenation include acute respiratory diseases, a history of epileptic seizures, impaired patency of the auditory canals, the presence of cavities in the lungs, severe arterial hypertension, neoplasms, and increased individual sensitivity to oxygen.

Can the drug be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women?

It is not recommended for pregnant women to use the drug after 5 months of gestation. Breastfeeding must be discontinued during the use of oxygen.

Does the drug affect the ability to drive a vehicle?

Due to possible dizziness, one should refrain from driving a vehicle or performing tasks that require increased attention and rapid reaction.

How does this gas interact with other medicines?

Nitrates, adrenoblockers, calcium ion antagonists, and nootropics promote better utilization of oxygen by the tissues, which helps reduce oxygen starvation and increase the body's resistance.

Pharmacological properties.

Pharmacodynamics.

Oxygen belongs to the group of drugs known as anti-hypoxants and antioxidants. It has the ability to bind with blood hemoglobin in the lungs and, as a complex compound with heme, is transported to the body's cells. Oxygen is a strong oxidizing agent and an essential element in the metabolic conversion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into energy to sustain vital functions of the organism.

Pharmacokinetics.

In the human body, oxygen diffuses through the lung tissue into the blood, where it binds to hemoglobin in erythrocytes and partially dissolves in plasma. It is then transported to body tissues, where it diffuses into the tissue interstitial fluid. The final stage of respiration is the utilization of oxygen in biological oxidation processes to generate energy within cells, after which, following a series of transformations, it is excreted by the lungs in the form of carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Clinical characteristics.

Indications.

Diseases accompanied by hypoxia:

respiratory organs:

  • pneumonia;
  • pulmonary edema;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • pneumosclerosis;

cardiovascular system:

  • heart failure;
  • coronary insufficiency.

Poisonings:

  • carbon monoxide;
  • hydrocyanic acid;
  • suffocating gases.

Used during general anesthesia
in combination with inhalation anesthetics; in the postoperative period.

Used for the preparation of oxygen cocktails and foams.

Contraindications.

For hyperbaric oxygenation, contraindications include acute respiratory diseases, history of epileptiform seizures, impaired patency of auditory tubes and canals connecting the paranasal sinuses, presence of lung cavities, bronchopleural fistulas, severe forms of arterial hypertension, neoplasms, and increased individual sensitivity to oxygen.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions.

Nitrates, adrenoblockers, calcium ion antagonists, and nootropics promote more efficient tissue utilization of oxygen, improve its utilization, and thereby reduce hypoxia and increase the body's resistance to oxygen deficiency.

Special precautions for use.

Women during menstruation should use the product only if necessary and under monitoring of hemoglobin levels in cases of severe respiratory insufficiency.

Use with humidifiers is recommended.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Do not use during pregnancy for longer than 5 months.

Breastfeeding should be discontinued for the duration of treatment with this medicinal product.

Ability to affect reaction speed when driving or operating machinery.

Due to possible dizziness, patients should refrain from driving or performing tasks requiring increased attention and rapid reaction.

Method of administration and dosage.

In hospital settings, oxygen is most commonly administered by inhalation through special masks made of rubber or plastic, connected directly to steel oxygen cylinders.

In outpatient practice and at home, special rubber or plastic containers (bags) filled with oxygen or its mixture are more frequently used.

For hyperbaric oxygenation, i.e., delivery of oxygen under increased pressure, special ventilated devices, so-called hyperbaric chambers, are used, where oxygen is administered both by inhalation and through mucous membranes and skin.

Oxygen is most commonly administered by inhalation as a mixture with air at a concentration of 40–60% at a flow rate of 4–5 liters per minute. A mixture called "carbogen," consisting of 95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide, is also used. Usually, the mixture is administered humidified.

During hyperbaric oxygenation, oxygen is delivered under pressure of 1.2–2 atm. For therapeutic purposes, 8–10 sessions are conducted.

For preparing oxygen cocktails and foams, oxygen is mixed with food products, juices, and herbal infusions.

Children.

The medicinal product is used in pediatric practice.

Overdose.

In case of overdose, nausea, vomiting, and convulsions may occur. Symptomatic therapy is administered.

Side effects.

In individual patients, individual hypersensitivity to oxygen and its mixtures, dizziness, nausea, increased dryness of mucous membranes, their irritation, cough may occur.

Store in a place protected from direct sunlight, at a temperature not exceeding 50 °C. Avoid contact with open flame and sources of heat. Do not allow contact with oils. Do not drop or throw.
