1. What Albothyl is and what it is used for

The active substance policresulen acts selectively on necrotic and pathologically altered tissue proteins.
It does not affect healthy tissues. The acidic nature of the medicine (low pH) destroys bacteria.
Albothyl is indicated for the local treatment of bacterial vaginitis.
Albothyl is not recommended for use in women under 18 years of age or during menopause,
due to lack of experience with the use of this medicine in these patient groups.

2. Important information before using Albothyl

When not to use Albothyl

  • If the patient is allergic to the active substance or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • During menstruation.

Warnings and precautions
Before starting treatment with Albothyl, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Do not swallow Albothyl globules, as polycresulen may cause erosion of the oesophagus. In case of accidental ingestion of Albothyl, drink plenty of water and contact your doctor immediately to prevent erosion of the oral cavity, throat, and oesophagus.
  • Albothyl strongly stimulates the healing process. There is no cause for concern if necrotic tissue detaches (even in large amounts) from diseased areas. This is a sign of the therapeutic effect of the medicine.
  • Due to the risk of irritation, traditional soaps should be avoided for intimate hygiene during treatment with this medicine.
  • Sexual intercourse should be avoided during treatment with Albothyl and for 7 days after discontinuation of the medicine.
  • Protect the eyes from contact with the medicine. If the medicine comes into contact with the eyes, rinse immediately with water; consultation with an ophthalmologist may be necessary.
  • Albothyl does not protect against infections caused by HIV virus or other sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhoea or syphilis.
  • If fabric or skin becomes contaminated with Albothyl, wash the affected area immediately with water to prevent drying.
  • Spots visible on the surface of the globules are due to the natural appearance of the globule base and do not affect the efficacy or safety of the medicine.
