The drug is used for the treatment of chronic hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid levels) accompanied by the deposition of urate crystals, particularly in the presence of tophi or gouty arthritis. It is also indicated for the prevention of hyperuricemia in adult patients undergoing chemotherapy for hematological malignancies with a risk of developing tumor lysis syndrome.
