The drug is used to treat benign gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease, as well as conditions of excessive acid secretion (e.g., Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). It is also used to prevent the aspiration of acidic gastric contents into the lungs during general anesthesia.
