The drug is used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It is prescribed to adults to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as for the treatment of hyperlipidemia (elevated blood fat levels). In children aged 10 to 17 years, it is used as an adjunct to diet for certain forms of familial hypercholesterolemia.
