The drug is used for the prevention of rickets and osteomalacia in children and adults, as well as for the prevention of vitamin D deficiency. Additionally, it may be prescribed as an adjunct to osteoporosis therapy in adults.

The drug is prescribed for vitamin B12 deficiency that cannot be compensated for through diet. This includes cases of megaloblastic anemia (e.g., pernicious anemia), funicular myelosis, as well as impaired vitamin absorption in the intestines (due to diet, intestinal diseases, or congenital factors).
