It is used for diseases accompanied by oxygen starvation (hypoxia), such as pneumonia, pulmonary edema, bronchial asthma, heart failure, and coronary insufficiency. It is also applied in cases of poisoning by carbon monoxide, cyanide, or asphyxiating gases, during general anesthesia, and in the postoperative period.
