The drug is used to treat chronic hyperuricemia (elevated uric acid levels) accompanied by the deposition of urate crystals, particularly in the presence of tophi or gouty arthritis. Liquestia is also prescribed to adults for the prevention of hyperuricemia during chemotherapy for hematological malignancies with a risk of developing tumor lysis syndrome.
