The drug is used to reduce toxicity and neutralize the effects of folic acid antagonists (e.g., methotrexate) during chemotherapy. It is also used as part of combination therapy with 5-fluorouracil and for the treatment of megaloblastic anemia if oral folic acid administration is not possible.
