The drug is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), skin, urinary tract, intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, biliary tract infections), gynecological infections, and septicemia. It is also used for the prevention of postoperative complications and empirical therapy in cases of neutropenic fever.

The drug is used in cases where oral administration is not possible. It is prescribed for the exacerbation of gastric or duodenal ulcers with bleeding, for the short-term treatment of reflux disease with erosions, for the prevention of acid reflux into the esophagus, as well as for Zollinger–Ellison syndrome.
