The drug is used to treat bacterial infections such as meningitis, pneumonia (community-acquired and hospital-acquired), otitis, urinary tract infections, bone and joint infections, skin infections, as well as gonorrhea, syphilis, and endocarditis. It is also used for the prevention of infections before surgery and in the case of Lyme borreliosis.

The drug is used to treat various infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including: complicated intestinal infections, pneumonia, acute gynecological infections, complicated skin infections, urinary tract infections (including pyelonephritis), and bacterial septicemia. It is also used for the prevention of infections following certain surgical interventions.
