It is used in adults to prevent blood clots after knee or hip surgery, to prevent stroke in people with irregular heart rhythm (non-valvular atrial fibrillation), and to treat or prevent blood clots in the veins of the legs and lungs. In children, it is used to treat and prevent the formation of blood clots.
