It is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria, such as throat infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, diphtheria), pneumonia, skin, muscle, and tendon infections, inflammation of the digestive tract, whooping cough, sexually transmitted infections, and newborn conjunctivitis. It is also used to prevent relapses of rheumatic fever in people allergic to penicillin and to prevent exposure to diphtheria and whooping cough.
