It is used to help prevent HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents weighing at least 35 kg who are at a higher risk of infection (pre-exposure prophylaxis: PrEP). It should be used alongside safer sexual practices, such as the use of condoms.

It is used to treat HIV infection in adults and adolescents (at least 12 years old and weighing at least 35 kg) who are also receiving injectable rilpivirine and whose infection is under control. It does not cure the infection, but it helps to keep the virus at low levels and to maintain CD4+ cells to fight infections.
