The medicine is used to treat severe bacterial infections in adults and children over 3 months of age. It may be used in cases of pneumonia, bronchopulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis, complicated urinary tract infections, abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, as well as brain and blood infections, and perinatal infections. It is also used in patients with neutropenia where an infection is suspected.
