The drug is used to treat, among others, respiratory tract infections (throat, tonsils, sinuses, middle ear, lungs, and bronchi), skin infections, urethral infections, and in dentistry (e.g., in the case of abscesses or gingivitis). It is also used prophylactically in congenital toxoplasmosis, for the prevention of meningococcal meningitis, and in individuals allergic to penicillin to prevent recurrences of rheumatic fever.
