It is an antibiotic used to treat severe infections. In drip form (intravenously), it is administered for infections of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, bones, joints, lungs (pneumonia), and heart (endocarditis), even if the infection is accompanied by the presence of bacteria in the blood. In oral form, it is used in adults and children for the treatment of pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria.
