It is an antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections. It is administered intravenously (as an infusion) in the case of infections of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, bones, joints, lungs (pneumonia), and the lining of the heart. Orally, it is used to treat pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile bacteria.
