The medicine is used in adults to prevent the formation of blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery and in people with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) to prevent clots in the heart. It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, and in children (above 28 days of age) for the treatment and prevention of clots in the veins or lungs.
