The medicine is used in adults to prevent deep vein thrombosis after hip or knee surgery and to prevent blood clots in the heart in people with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation). It is also used to treat blood clots in the veins of the lower limbs and pulmonary vessels and to prevent them from recurring. In children and adolescents, it is used to treat and prevent blood clots in the veins or pulmonary vessels.
