The medicine is used to relieve or prevent pain during and after surgery. In adults, when administered intravenously, it is used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia, whereas when administered epidurally, it helps to relieve pain after surgical procedures, after cesarean section, and during childbirth. In children over 1 month of age, it is used intravenously as an analgesic during general anesthesia, and in children over 1 year of age, it is used epidurally for the relief of postoperative pain.
