The medicine is used in adults for the treatment of, among others, respiratory tract, urinary tract, genital tract, gastrointestinal tract, skin, bone, and joint infections, as well as for the prevention of infections caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium and in cases of exposure to inhaled anthrax bacilli. In children and adolescents, it is used for the treatment of lung and bronchial infections (in people with cystic fibrosis), complicated urinary tract infections, and in cases of exposure to inhaled anthrax bacilli.

The medicine is used in skin and mucous membrane infections caused by herpes viruses (labial or genital) and the varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox and shingles). It also helps in other viral infections and supports the treatment of immunocompromised individuals with recurrent upper respiratory tract infections.
