The medicine is used in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (such as heartburn, pain when swallowing, or acid regurgitation) and to prevent recurrences of esophagitis. In adults, it also helps to prevent gastric and duodenal ulcers in individuals who must take continuous anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
