This medicine is an anticoagulant used to prevent the formation of blood clots. In adults, it is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis after hip or knee surgery, to prevent clots in the heart in those with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), and to treat clots in the leg veins or lungs. It is also used in children and adolescents to treat and prevent clots in the veins or lungs.

This medicine is used to reduce the number of seizures in adults, adolescents, and children. It can be used alone or together with other anti-epileptic drugs to treat specific forms of epilepsy.

This medicine is used to treat adults with an enlarged spleen or symptoms related to myelofibrosis. It is also indicated for adults with polycythemia vera who do not tolerate or are resistant to hydroxyurea, and for children (from 28 days of age and older for the acute form and from 6 months of age and older for the chronic form) and adults with graft-versus-host disease (GvHD).
