It is used for the local treatment of pain in adults and adolescents (from 14 years of age onwards). Specifically, it is used for pain from muscle strains, sprains or bruises, for osteoarthritis of the knees and fingers, for elbow inflammation (epicondylitis), and for acute muscle pain, such as back pain.

It is used to treat excess iron in the body (iron overload) in patients with beta thalassemia major (from 6 years of age), in children aged 2 to 5 years with iron overload due to infrequent transfusions or in other forms of anemia, and in patients aged 10 years and older with thalassemia syndromes that do not require transfusions.
