It is used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men at increased risk of fractures. It is also used to treat bone loss in men caused by reduced testosterone levels (due to surgery or therapy for prostate cancer) and bone loss due to long-term glucocorticoid use in patients at risk of fracture.

It is used in adults with advanced cancer to prevent serious complications caused by bone metastases (such as fractures or pressure on the bone marrow) and for the treatment of giant cell bone tumor in adults and adolescents whose bones have stopped growing.
