This medicine is an anticoagulant used in adults to prevent the formation of blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, to prevent clots in the heart in patients with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), and to treat or prevent the recurrence of clots in the leg veins or lungs. This medicine is used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is used in adults to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers in the stomach or the upper part of the intestine (duodenum), ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and for excessive acidity caused by Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also indicated in children over one year of age for reflux and over 4 years of age for Helicobacter pylori ulcers.
