It is an antiepileptic drug used to treat various types of epileptic seizures. It is used alone in adults and adolescents (from 16 years of age) for certain forms of epilepsy, or as an add-on to other drugs in adults, adolescents, and children (from 4 years of age) for different seizures.

It is used to induce a state of calmness, drowsiness, or sleep (sedation), and to relieve anxiety and muscle tension. In adults, it can be used for sedation during medical examinations or procedures, for sedation in intensive care, as anesthesia, or as premedication to promote relaxation before anesthesia.
